Albany & Catskills

Posted on October 31, 2003

Last week we took a mini-vacation in Albany (where Shoshana had a one day seminar) and hiked in the Catskills on the way home. The foliage was beautiful in the Albany area but well past peak in the mountains. The state office plaza is a monument to Nelson Rockefeller’s love affair with modern art. In addition to the architecture above ground there is an underground concourse with the largest collection of modern art not in a museum. One of the buildings is the tallest building in NY state outside NYC and has an observatory on the top floor from which on a clear day one can view the Adirondacks looking north and the Catskills looking south. Albany seems like a nice enough small city with decent restaurants. On the way back we stayed at the Mountain Gate Lodge in Oliveria (; the rooms are spartan but it’s in a beautiful location and has the best Indian food we’ve ever tasted. The next day we visited my sister & sister-in-law & 2 year old twin nieces in New Rochelle before heading back to Brooklyn. Now we’re back to the old routine.
